This Space Intentionally Left Blank is a process for creating ensemble-devised theatre that is intensely tied to the time, place, and people who create it. Rather than casting performers into a predetermined concept, Left Blank first builds a cast, and then creates a show collaboratively around that cast. The results are raw, emotional, and often comedic, but above all: stories that could only have been produced by these people, in this place, at this time.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank was first produced in 2014, resulting in a 20-minute one-act play, 'photoBOMB!' in which a Satanist plot to steal the souls of every human on earth can only be foiled by hipsters and the Amish. From selfies to life and death, it was a play very much of its time. The 2017 revival took the tabula rasa, art-ex-nihilo approach even further, re-imagining This Space Intentionally Left Blank as a long-form improv show, built around a talented cast, creating a fully-formed narrative experience on the fly and on the spot. The resulting group of improvisers, christening themselves "Tom's Dinner", continue to perform around Seattle. |
